Turn Off Siri in macOS Catalina

Siri takes up some resources in the background even when it’s not in use, so if you don’t use Siri, its best to disable it.

  1. Go to System Preferences.
  2. Click on Siri
  3. Uncheck Enable Ask Siri

Turn off font smoothing and dynamic desktop in macOS Catalina

macOS Catalina comes with beautiful aesthetics but it can also slow down your mac. If you are more concerned about performance than graphics. Then, its best to turn them off.

  1. Go to System Preferences.
  2. Click on Accessibility.
  3. On the left panel, select Display.
  4. Now check the two boxes next to Reduce Motion and Reduce Transparency.
  5. Go back to the System Preferences home screen and select Desktop & Screen Saver.

If you have the dynamic desktop as your wallpaper, pick either Light or Dark from the drop-down menu next to the wallpaper’s name. Dynamic desktops hog a lot of system resources, and switching to a still image can help increase the performance of your Mac.

Turn Off Notifications you don’t need in macOS Catalina

Unnecessary notifications aren’t of much help and take up memory as well, so Its best to disable the ones you don’t need.

  1. Go to System Preferences.
  2. Click Notifications.
  3. On the left panel, select the app you don’t want to get notified about.
  4. Disable Allow Notifications from Notes switch on the right panel.

Disable unneeded startup items in macOS Catalina

It often happens that you install a program and it starts automatically every time you log in to your system even when you don’t need it to. This is also one of the bold reasons why mac can become slow. So Its best to stop unwanted applications to start automatically on your system.

  1. Go to System Preferences in your dock or under the Apple logo(top left).
  2. Click on Users and Groups.
  3. On the right panel click Login Items.
  4. Select the app you don’t want to open automatically and click the minus( – ) button at the bottom.

Disable Hidden Startup Items

Some startup items are hidden and can’t be viewed by default. So you can use a third-party application to view them. And here, “CC cleaner” can be a good candidate.

  1. Download and Launch CC Cleaner.
  2. Click Tools in the left panel.
  3. On the right panel select Startup.
  4. Here you can disable or remove hidden unneeded startup items.

Empty System Cache in macOS Catalina

macOS stores your system log and cache files that eventually pile up to hog a big load of space on your Mac. As they are of no importance or need, it’s better of to get rid of them.

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Click Go in the top menu.
  3. Select Go to Folder and type in ~/Library/Caches.
  4. Now select the files and send to trash.

Note: Make sure the files are not important before deleting.

If you have older Mac, MacBook or iMac than the ones mentioned in the start, or the tips for speeding your macOS Catalina aren’t helping. Then it might just be the time to upgrade your mac or you can also downgrade your macOS to the version that you had no trouble while using.
