How to Boot in Safe Mode in Windows 10

Have you tried pressing F2 repeatedly in the boot screen, only to see that nothing happens? Well, that is because of the startup time which has exponentially decreased since the advent of Windows 8 and Windows 10.

1. How to Re-Enable F8 key to Boot in Safe mode in Windows 10

Microsoft has put a tool in the Windows that controls how a system starts. The tool is known as BCD(Boot Configuration Data) Edit, and through cmd, it can make you access Safe mode again, easily, with the following steps:

#1. Hit the Windows key and type cmd, then right-click on Command Prompt and click Run as administrator, you could also press Control+Shift+Enter to run it as administrator.

IMPORTANT: Make sure to run as administrator otherwise it won’t produce results.

2. Now copy the command below and paste it in cmd then press the Enter key;

bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

You’ll see: The operation completed successfully.

 

3. Restart your PC and now you can use the F8 key while your PC is booting to access Safe Mode.

NOTE: This only works if your Windows is booting normally.

#2. How to Boot in Safe Mode When Your Windows isn’t Booting Normally

If your Windows can’t boot normally, follow this method:

1. Open your PC, then press and hold the power button until it shuts it off, then repeat the power on and off 2 to 3 times until you see Preparing Automatic Repair on your computer screen. (Screenshot below)

Note: After 2 3 failed reboots, Windows opens this Automatic Repair and then Diagnoses, which leads to access Safe Mode. That’s our aim.

Let it Diagnose your PC.

 

2. Click Advanced Options to open Recovery Options screen.

 

3. Click Troubleshoot

 

4. Click Advanced options

 

5. Click Startup Settings

 

6. Finally, click Restart.

 

7. After restarting you’ll see a new screen with several options. Press the 4 number key to get into the normal Safe mode or Press the 5 number key for a Safe mode with Internet access, so you can do some research too.

#3. How to Access Safe Mode when Your Windows is Working Normally

Open up Windows and head to the Start menu. Right-click on Power and whilst holding the Shift-key, click Restart.

 

Windows will now open the Recovery Options screen.

3. Click Troubleshoot

 

4. Click Advanced options

 

5. Click Startup Settings

 

6. Finally, click Restart.

 

7. After restarting you’ll see a new screen with several options. Press the 4 number key to get into the normal Safe mode or Press the 5 number key for a Safe mode with Internet access, so you can do some research too.
